Ready to run, and unlike anything else in a typical passenger consist.

Instruction cars were rolling classrooms, used to train railroaders on equipment, safety procedures and the handling of hazardous materials. Between them the two types covered both education and outreach, and they are among the most distinctive passenger cars ever built because each one was custom-made for its own job.

Broadway Limited built these on the modified 80 foot coach tooling originally developed for the 1947 American Freedom Train. Because every real instruction and exhibit car was a one-off conversion, no model can copy one exactly. These capture the look and character of the type at a price that keeps them accessible.

Specifications

Brand

Broadway Limited Imports

Item Number

9930

UPC

840396399308

Scale

HO (1:87)

Car Type

Heavyweight Railroad Instruction Car

Road Name

Chesapeake & Ohio

Road Number

#SI-4

Paint Scheme

blue, gray and yellow

Base Tooling

Modified 80 foot coach, from the 1947 American Freedom Train

Assembly

Ready to run

Condition

New

Features

Ready to run, no assembly required

Prototypically accurate Chesapeake & Ohio paint and lettering: blue, gray and yellow

Based on Broadway Limited's 80 foot heavyweight coach tooling

Separately applied detail parts

Knuckle couplers and free-rolling metal wheelsets

A genuinely unusual car for a passenger or maintenance consist

Scale: HO (1:87)

More in This Series

Other road names we stock from the same Broadway Limited instruction and exhibit car run:

Chessie System B&O #CSC-1 — BLI 9931

Denver & Rio Grande Western #X-200 — BLI 9932

Great Northern #X1828 — BLI 9933

Norfolk & Western #402 — BLI 9934

New York Central #X23177 — BLI 9935

Western Maryland #100 — BLI 9936

Southern Railway #24 — BLI 9939

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an instruction car?
Instruction cars were rolling classrooms, used to train railroaders on equipment, safety procedures and the handling of hazardous materials.

Is this an exact model of the real car?
Not exactly.
