We started online with no storefront at all, and that is what we were best at. Squeaky's Trains Express is us going back to it, with a counter you can walk into this time.
First, a thank you, and we mean it. To everybody who stops in on a random weekday just to see what came in. To everybody who has messaged us about a decoder that refuses to behave. To everybody who ordered from us online when a bigger site would have been the easier click. You built this shop. There is no version of Squeaky's without you.
We have started this letter a dozen times, because we wanted to get it right for you.
So before anything else, plainly: we are not closing. We are not going anywhere. We are open six days a week and that is not changing. What is changing is how we do this, and we already know it will not sit well with everybody. That is exactly why it deserves the whole story instead of a headline.
Squeaky's did not start with a building. It started online, with no storefront at all. Just a family who loves this hobby, answering messages late at night, up before sunrise putting love into every single package that went out the door. Every order had a name on it, and somebody who genuinely cared whether it turned up right.
When we opened these doors, the hope was a simple one. A place where you could actually see a locomotive before buying it. Where a new release sat on a shelf you could walk up to instead of in a photo on a screen. Where you could hold two cars side by side, ask a question out loud, get a straight answer, and leave with the right one instead of the one that looked right online.
We built that, and we were proud of it.
And month after month, the room stayed quiet. Some weeks that meant three people through the door.
We want to be careful here, because this is not a complaint. The love for this hobby is real and we see it every day. We read your messages. We see the layouts you send us photos of long after closing time. You are out there and you are building.
It just never turned into regular visits, and we understand why. Time is short, gas is not free, and the internet will put anything on your porch by Thursday. None of that is anybody's fault. But a quiet showroom full of stock is the most expensive thing a small shop can own, and we would be lying if we said the quiet did not sting a little.
So we sat with a question that turned out to be harder than it sounds. If the shelf is not being seen, what is that shelf actually for?
TWO SHOPS, ONE ROOF
Here is the other half of the picture, and it is the good half.
Squeaky's Aquatics, in this same building, is growing. On a normal day, more than forty people come through for the fish, the corals, and the plants. Forty in a day on one side of the building, three in a week on the other. That is not a gap you close by rearranging shelves, and the aquatics side keeps needing more room to keep up.
We could treat that as a sad comparison. We would rather treat it as the answer.
So Aquatics gets the floor space it has earned, and Trains gets the thing it was always better at anyway: the catalog, the knowledge, and the speed. Neither side is being cut. Each one is being pointed at what it actually does well.
And they hold each other up. Every person who comes in for a coral walks past the trains. Every person who comes to grab an Express order walks past the reef tanks. One roof, one trip, two hobbies with far more in common than people assume. Patience. Planning. Building something slowly over years. The very particular satisfaction of getting one small detail exactly right.
If you have only ever known us for one of the two, go look at the other one while you are here. That is the whole point of us being under the same roof.
WE STARTED WITHOUT A BUILDING
We meant that literally. There was no shop to visit. Squeaky's was a bench, a laptop, stock we knew inside and out, and one promise: tell us what you are after and we will find it, and we will not sell you the wrong thing just to make the sale.
That is the part people actually remember, and it was never the inventory levels. It is the message thread at eleven at night where we finally worked out why the decoder would not take a program on the main. The man hunting a road name because his own grandfather ran it, who did not really want a model so much as he wanted to tell somebody who would understand why it mattered. The order that turned up packed with obvious love, because somebody was up before sunrise making sure it would be.
None of that ever needed a storefront. It never did.
We were never the inventory. We were the people standing behind it.
SO HERE IS SQUEAKY'S TRAINS EXPRESS
So we are going back to what we were always best at, step by step. Not all at once, and not with a switch thrown on a Tuesday morning. Quietly, over the coming weeks and months, the shelves get leaner and the catalog gets deeper, until this shop is doing the thing it actually does well again. This time with something the original Squeaky's never had: a counter you can walk into.
Express is simple enough to explain in one breath. You order online. You choose local pickup. In most cases your order is sitting at our counter with your name on it the next day, and you pay nothing to ship it, because you are driving over anyway.
Here is what makes this better than our first go at it. Back then, going back to our roots would have meant a package on your porch and that is all. Now there is a building with our name on it, and a family inside who knows you. Express is the Squeaky's we were always best at, with a front door added.
We are keeping the everyday things on the shelf, the stuff you grab on the way home without planning for it. Track, glue, ballast, couplers, the small things that stop a project cold right when you have finally got an hour for it. Everything else moves into the Express catalog, and that catalog is deeper than our shelves could ever have been.
Here is the part we want you to hear clearly, because it is the whole idea. Every dollar sitting in a boxcar nobody asked for was a dollar we could not spend on the locomotive you actually wanted. Express moves that money. It goes into ordering faster, pre-ordering harder, and getting you the exact thing instead of the closest thing we happened to have in the building.
WHY WE CALLED IT EXPRESS
Because we run a train store, and in railroading the word already means something specific.
An express is the train that does not stop at every station. It skips what slows it down so your freight gets where it is going first. That is exactly what we are doing. We are cutting out the part where your locomotive sits on a shelf for months waiting for you to happen to walk past it, and we are keeping the part where it gets to you fast, in one piece, from people who know what it is.
Express is not a smaller Squeaky's. It is a faster one.
HOW SQUEAKY'S TRAINS EXPRESS WORKS
Four steps, and the fourth one is the one we care about most.
STEP 1
Find it online
Shop squeakystrains.com. If you cannot find it, call or message us and we will hunt it down with you. That has not changed and it never will.
STEP 2
Choose Local Pickup
At checkout, pick local pickup instead of shipping. It is free. It always has been.
STEP 3
We tell you when it lands
Most Express orders are ready the next day. Special orders and pre-orders take longer, and we will always tell you honestly which one yours is instead of letting you guess.
STEP 4
Come get it, and stay a minute
Bring the decoder that is fighting you. Bring pictures of the layout. This step is not a formality. It is the whole reason the other three exist.
WHAT EXPRESS GIVES YOU
-
A catalog far bigger than our shelves ever were. You are no longer limited to what we guessed you might want back when we placed the order.
-
Free next day pickup on most Express orders. No shipping charge, no carrier, no porch, no waiting on a truck.
-
Real pre-orders. Reserve limited runs and new releases through Express and stop finding out they sold out from a forum post.
-
No more wasted drives. You will know it is here before you get in the car, which is honestly the thing we felt worst about under the old way.
-
The same shop at the end of it. Same counter, same people, same twenty minutes on your wiring problem, free.
WHAT EXPRESS DOES NOT CHANGE
We are open. We are here. We are not closing, not moving, and the front door is not going anywhere. Going back to our roots does not mean going back to being a stranger on the other side of a screen. That is the whole reason we kept the building. Express is how you order from us now. It is not a replacement for us.
You can still walk in without an order. You can still ask a question you are half embarrassed to ask, and get a straight answer with nobody making a face about it. You can still put something on the counter and talk through whether it is really the right call for your layout, and we will still tell you when the answer is no.
That was the shop before we ever had a wall of boxcars. It will be the shop after.
AND ONE HONEST ASK
A small shop only survives on purpose. Not by accident, and not on charm.
So if you have been meaning to order a locomotive from a website that has never once asked how your layout is coming along, run it through Express instead. Same product. Roughly the same money. The difference is that on our end there is a real counter, in a real town, with a family who will know your name by the third visit and who will still be here the next time something goes sideways at the workbench and you need somebody who actually understands what you are describing.
That is the whole business. It always was. We just spent a few months thinking it was the shelf.
Thank you for staying with us while we worked that out. To the regulars who turned up week after week, to the people who bought from us in the store, and to the ones who kept ordering online through all of it: we saw it, we still see it, and we will keep doing everything we can for you. That part is not changing no matter what the shelves look like.
We are choosing to protect the best parts of this shop, the parts that were never sitting on a shelf to begin with. Put Express to the test, and come see us.
