Digitrax SP10188 | Oval 10mm x 18mm 8 Ohm Speaker | N & HO Scale

Description

The Digitrax SP10188 is a 10 x 18mm oval 8 ohm speaker - the shape that solves N scale sound installs. An oval fits the long, narrow space along the top of an N scale shell or inside a tender where a round speaker of the same area simply will not go, and it ships with interface wires already attached.

Features
  • 10 x 18mm oval footprint fits the long narrow cavities in N scale shells and small HO boilers where a round cone will not.
  • 8 ohm impedance matches the speaker output on most DCC sound decoders.
  • Interface wires pre-attached - nothing to solder at the speaker end.
  • Baffle or enclosure strongly recommended. Small speakers gain the most from a sealed box; run bare, an oval this size sounds thin.
  • Works with any DCC sound decoder rated for an 8 ohm load, Digitrax or otherwise.

FAQ

Why choose an oval speaker over a round one?
Shape. N scale shells and small steam boilers give you a long narrow cavity, not a circle. An oval uses that space, so you get more cone area than a round speaker that has to fit the narrow dimension.

Will it work with my sound decoder?
Any DCC sound decoder rated for an 8 ohm speaker output. Check the decoder manual - if it specifies 32 ohms, you need a 32 ohm speaker instead.

Do I need a baffle?
It makes a large difference at this size. Sealing the back of the cone is what produces the bass; without it the front and rear waves cancel and the sound goes thin and tinny.

Is there a bigger option for HO?
Yes. If the shell has room, a 28mm round or one of the rectangular box speakers with an enclosure will give you noticeably more volume and low end.
