The WalthersMainline 81' 8-Axle Depressed Center Flatcar in Southern Railway #50030 is built for serious heavy-haul scenes. With its low-slung well between two four-wheel trucks, this HO scale prototype has hauled transformers, generators, and other oversize freight on Southern's mainline since the 1960s — a perfect addition to any modern or transition-era freight roster.

Will this run on my existing HO layout?
Yes. It has body-mounted Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers and 36" RP-25 wheelsets, and runs on standard HO Code 70, 83, or 100 track. Eight-axle cars need broad curves — 24" radius minimum recommended.

What loads does this car carry?
Depressed center flats are designed for oversize and heavy freight — transformers, generators, large castings, and similar industrial loads. Walthers makes the Cornerstone Electric Transformer Kit (#933-3126) sized specifically for this car.

Is the body really die-cast metal?
Yes — the heavy die-cast frame keeps the car planted on the rails whether running empty or loaded. It's a noticeable upgrade over plastic-bodied freight cars in the same size class.

What couplers does it use?
It comes ready to run with Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers, body-mounted, fully compatible with Kadee and other knuckle couplers.
