The Digitrax SDXN167n18 is an N scale sound decoder on the Next18 plug, so in a Next18-equipped locomotive the install is a single connector and nothing else. It carries SoundFX v3 with eight CV-selectable steam and diesel sound schemes on board, which means one decoder covers a lot of different models, and new .spjs sound files can be loaded later with a Digitrax USB programmer.

Does my locomotive have a Next18 socket?
Pull the shell and look for a small 18-pin connector, much smaller than a 21MTC and finer-pitched than an 8-pin socket. Manufacturers usually advertise it as "Next18 ready". The Atlas N FA-1 is one common example.
Is a speaker included?
No. Pick a speaker that fits your shell and matches the decoder impedance - in N scale that usually means a 13mm round or a small oval. Fitting it in a sealed baffle makes a large difference to the result.
What do the eight sound schemes cover?
A mix of steam and diesel prime movers, selectable by CV, so one decoder can serve several different models in your fleet without reloading sound.
Can I load a different sound file?
Yes. New .spjs files can be written to the decoder with a Digitrax USB programmer such as the PR4. Running the decoder needs no Digitrax hardware at all - any NMRA DCC system will do.
