The ESU 51840 SignalPilot is a multi-protocol accessory decoder built mainly for switching color light signals. It has 16 outputs that drive micro bulbs or LEDs (with series resistors) directly, and because every output is a push/pull stage it works with signals wired common anode or common cathode, including Viessmann signals.
Each output can run as a steady, flashing or pulsed light, with adjustable brightness and fade times plus prototypical effects such as soft dimming, fluorescent tube, gas lantern and flicker. Outputs are grouped into signal aspects with the ESU LokProgrammer software, and up to 16 accessory addresses switch those aspects from your throttle. Motorized semaphore signals and turnout drives can be run from it too.
What does the SignalPilot control?
Mainly color light signals. It can also run motorized semaphore signals and turnout drives.
How do I set up the signal aspects?
Signal aspects are configured with the ESU LokProgrammer, sold separately. Choose the signal type in the software, write it to the decoder, and the software shows you how to wire the signal.
Does it work with my DCC system?
Yes. It is an NMRA DCC accessory decoder and also supports Motorola systems. It can be programmed on the main or on the programming track, and RailCom lets you read CVs back.
Can I use LED signals?
Yes, with series resistors. Signals wired common anode or common cathode both work, because every output is a push/pull stage.
Does it need its own power supply?
No. It can run from your command station, or from a separate DC or AC supply up to 18V AC.
Is this the same as a SwitchPilot?
No. The SignalPilot is built for signals and lighting with 16 low-current outputs. For twin-coil turnout motors, see the ESU 51830 SwitchPilot or the ESU 51831 SwitchPilot 3 Plus.
