Rapido 123003-5 | PRR X31A Single-Door Boxcar - PRR #70246 Shadow Keystone - Early | HO Scale

Description

Rapido's HO scale Pennsylvania Railroad X31A boxcar in the Shadow Keystone - Early scheme, road number #70246. This is the single door version, an all-new tooling with separately applied grabs and ladders, complete underbody piping and correct PRR class 2D-F12 trucks.

The PRR built 6,700 X31A boxcars, with another 2,000 in the similar X31B and X31C classes — after 1949 the X31 series was the railroad's second most numerous boxcar type, and more than many railroads owned in freight cars of all kinds. Their distinctive round roofs squeezed maximum capacity out of the standard loading gauge, and they roamed all of North America until age caught up with them in the mid-1960s. Over a thousand were still running at the Penn Central merger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need assembly?
No. It is ready to run, with couplers, trucks and metal wheelsets already fitted.

What era does this car suit?
The X31A served from the 1930s until the mid-1960s, with over a thousand still in service at the 1968 Penn Central merger — so it works from the steam era right through early diesel.

Single door or double door?
This one is the single-door version. The PRR built the X31A in both, and Rapido tooled each separately.

Will the couplers work with my other cars?
Yes. Macdonald-Cartier couplers are knuckle couplers and mate with Kadee and compatible types.

What scale is this?
HO scale (1:87).
