Estimated Time: 1 - 2 Weeks Free USA Shipping The ATSF 3460 class consisted of six "Super Hudson" 4-6-4 steam locomotives built by Baldwin in 1937. One of those, #3460, was the Santa Fe's only streamlined locomotive. It was painted in a unique light blue and silver paint scheme and gained the name "Blue Goose". The Blue Goose was delivered to Shopton, Iowa in January 1938, and it pulled many of the Santa Fe's famed passenger trains until it was retired and scrapped in 1956. In our first production run of the Blue Goose, we are offering two models of the early locomotive as it appeared in 1938 and four models of the locomotive as it appeared between 1939 and retirement. The only difference between the two 1938 models is the presence of the road number "3460" on the side of the tender. Each of our four post-1938 model has a unique paint scheme, prototypically accurate for a specific time frame. The most visible detail differences between the early and late Blue Goose versions are the removal of the full skirts and the addition of the scissor smokestack and associated equipment. All of the models have hand-crafted brass boilers, cabs, and tender bodies, and die cast locomotive and tender chassis. The carbody rode on two enormous articulated half-frames that were linked at the middled with a hinged joint. One unpowered four-wheel truck at each end guided the locomotive through curves and helped provide stability. The Centipedes were huge - 91.5' feet long for single units as operated on SAL and NdM. Semi-permanently coupled pairs, as operated on the PRR, were 183' long! Each unit contained two 1500 horsepower diesel motors, so a pair contained four motors and totaled 6000 horsepower. Centipedes were heavy, totaling 1,200,000 pounds (1.2 million) for a pair, with more than 800,000 of those pounds carried by the 16 drivers. In 1945, the prototype A1-A2 set toured American railroads and three railroads placed orders - PRR, SAL, and NdeM. Union Pacific originally ordered two units, but never took delivery. Unfortunately, the Centipedes did not last long in service. PRR and SAL retired theirs by the early 1960's and NdeM followed in the late 60's. The Centipedes were enormous, and maybe the most unique diesel locomotive design of the era, but they could not compete with the more capable EMD locomotives. In 1945, the prototype A1-A2 set toured American railroads and three railroads placed orders - PRR, SAL, and NdeM. Union Pacific originally ordered two units, but never took delivery. Unfortunately, the Centipedes did not last long in service. PRR and SAL retired theirs by the early 1960's and NdeM followed in the late 60's. The Centipedes were enormous, and maybe the most unique diesel locomotive design of the era, but they could not compete with the more capable EMD locomotives. In our 2022 production of Centipedes, we are offering models in all of the prototypical paint schemes, including the Demonstrator scheme. We are also offering two Union Pacific sets. There has been a debate over the years about which road numbers the units would have been assigned, so we have built models painted for both 1600A/1601A and also 998/999. With the help of the American Locomotive Company's design engineers, NP designed a new locomotive with a massive firebox that had a 115 square foot grate area supported by a four wheel trailing truck. It was the first locomotive with a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. ALCO delivered the first of 12 of these new locomotives in December of 1926, with the balance arriving early in 1927. Designated Class A, and assigned road numbers 2600 through 2611, they had 73" drivers, 28 x 30" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 210 psi, a tractive effort of 57,500 lbs and weighed 426,000 pounds. Later, the boiler pressure was raised to 240 psi which increased the tractive effort to 65,700 pounds. These were the first of this new wheel arrangement and thus were to be the namesake, with the name Northern Pacific selected which was very quickly shortened to just Northern. Ten Class A-2s (road numbers 2650 through 2659) came from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1934. These heavy Northerns had 77" drivers, 28 x 31" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 260 psi, a tractive effort of 69,800 lbs and a weight of 489,400 pounds. In 1938, The Northern Pacific took delivery of eight Class A-3s (road numbers 2660 through 2667), and at the sample time three more were delivered to the SP&S. The specifications for these locomotives were identical to the Class A-2 except that each weighed 2,400 pounds more. The SP&S locomotives were designated Class E-1. They were mostly identical to the Northern Pacific A-3's, except all three were oil burners. The eight Class A-4s (road numbers 2670 through 2677) were delivered by Baldwin in 1941, and had the same basic specifications as the A-3s, but were different in appearance, with 14 wheel centipede tenders and vestibule cabs, and they were 1000 pounds heavier. The last of the 4-8-4s purchased by the NP were the Class A-5s, which were built by Baldwin in 1943. This group of 10 (road numbers 2680 through 2689) were built to the same specifications as the Class A-4s, but turned out to be 16,200 lbs heavier. They were among the heaviest of all the Northern type locomotives ever built, at 508,500 pounds only the Santa Fe Class 2900s weighed more. There are no surviving Northern Pacific Northerns.
