At home in cities and towns, dealerships like this distribute fuel oil, gasoline and other products locally. This structure kit includes horizontal and vertical storage tanks, above-ground piping, pump house with header stand to unload tank cars, truck loading rack and corrugated metal office. Like the prototypes, the various pieces on Interstate Fuel and Oil can be arranged to fit available space. A gas pump, oil drums and other details are also provided. The HO Scale Walthers Cornerstone Central Gas and Supply kit is a great trackside business for every 1960s and later layout. Propane distribution facilities are common throughout the country, receiving bulk shipments by rail and truck. The gas is easily converted into a liquid, which is then stored in insulated, cylindrical tanks. Commonly used for home and industrial heating, propane is also widely used as fuel for taxis, trucks and buses. This easy-to-build kit is similar to dealerships from coast to coast, and similar storage and handling facilities can be found alongside railroad shops, grain elevators and many types of industries. Nearly identical tanks are used for anhydrous ammonia storage, to model them simply shorten the two vent pipes. Shipments arrive in LPG gas tank cars, and nearly identical cars are used for handling anhydrous ammonia fertilizer. The Central Gas and Supply kit includes the office, two storage tanks, pump houses, and smaller bottles and tanks typical of those used at rural homes. While most roads had one major backshop, the prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Machine Shop allowed railroads to make repairs at outlying terminals since it was often faster, more cost-effective and got the locomotives back on the road and earning their keep. As new engine terminals were built, most received a machine shop capable of handling just about any type of repair that might be needed. This kit matches the design of the Modern Roundhouse (933-2900, sold separately), and can be built as an attached or freestanding building. It also includes a boiler house, which would supply steam, electricity and compressed air to the entire facility. Large roll-up doors can be built open or closed, and the baseplate of the Machine Shop kit has slots that accept popular rail sizes. A Curbside Classic for Post-1930s Layouts Not too long ago, prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Al's Victory Service Gas Station could be found at every busy city intersection and along most major highways. Premium was 25 cents a gallon, maps were free and restrooms were clean. There was a mechanic on duty who could fix anything. And Al always wore a spotless uniform when he came out to pump your gas, check the oil and wash the windows. Introduced in the late 1930s, box-style stations like Al's this sprang up from coast to coast and remained a standard well into the 1950s. Combining the office, restrooms and service bays into one structure, they provided a uniform, neat appearance that attracted motorists. Lots of windows made them bright and cheerful, as did the enameled steel walls decorated in company colors. Although newer stations have taken their place, many survive today and many have been repurposed as independent garages, body shops, retail stores and offices. A few have even been converted into private homes! Authentic styling looks great on any vintage or modern street scene.
