By the 1920s the Northern Pacific Railroad needed bigger passenger locomotives. With the help of the American Locomotive Company's design engineers, NP designed a new locomotive with a massive firebox that had a 115 square foot grate area supported by a four wheel trailing truck. It was the first locomotive with a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. ALCO delivered the first of 12 of these new locomotives in December of 1926, with the balance arriving early in 1927. Designated Class A, and assigned road numbers 2600 through 2611, they had 73" drivers, 28 x 30" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 210 psi, a tractive effort of 57,500 lbs and weighed 426,000 pounds. Later, the boiler pressure was raised to 240 psi which increased the tractive effort to 65,700 pounds. These were the first of this new wheel arrangement and thus were to be the namesake, with the name Northern Pacific selected which was very quickly shortened to just Northern.  Ten Class A-2s (road numbers 2650 through 2659) came from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1934. These heavy Northerns had 77" drivers, 28 x 31" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 260 psi, a tractive effort of 69,800 lbs and a weight of 489,400 pounds. In 1938, The Northern Pacific took delivery of eight Class A-3s (road numbers 2660 through 2667), and at the sample time three more were delivered to the SP&S.   The specifications for these locomotives were identical to the Class A-2 except that each weighed 2,400 pounds more. The SP&S locomotives were designated Class E-1.   They were mostly identical to the Northern Pacific A-3's, except all three were oil burners.   The eight Class A-4s (road numbers 2670 through 2677) were delivered by Baldwin in 1941, and had the same basic specifications as the A-3s, but were different in appearance, with 14 wheel centipede tenders and vestibule cabs, and they were 1000 pounds heavier. The last of the 4-8-4s purchased by the NP were the Class A-5s, which were built by Baldwin in 1943. This group of 10 (road numbers 2680 through 2689) were built to the same specifications as the Class A-4s, but turned out to be 16,200 lbs heavier. They were among the heaviest of all the Northern type locomotives ever built, at 508,500 pounds only the Santa Fe Class 2900s weighed more. There are no surviving Northern Pacific Northerns.   Industry-Leading Features:    NP and SP&S Northern Model Information:  ALL-NEW Paragon4 Sound & Control System Synchronized Puffing Smoke with Chuff Sound Variable Puffing Smoke Intensity and timing Integral DCC Decoder with Back EMF for Industry Best Slow Speed Operation in DC and DCC Precision Drive Mechanism engineered for continuous heavy load towing and smooth slow speed operation 5-Pole Can Motor with Skew Wound Armature Built-in Capacity Pack for Improved Electrical Pick-up Premium Caliber Painting with Authentic Paint Schemes Prototypical Light Operation with Golden White LED Headlight, Rear Light   Brass Locomotive and Tender Body Heavyweight Die Cast Chassis for Maximum Pulling Power Accurately Modeled with Multiple Detail Options Appropriate for Each Paint Scheme Option for Low Numberplate Beneath Headlight Option for High or Low Numberboards where Accurate Smokestack Extension Present Where Appropriate Prototypically Accurate Paint Schemes for Each Model Many Separately Applied Details Including Handrails, Grab Irons, Ladders, Piping, Whistle, and Brass Bell Equipped with Traction Tires for Increased Pulling Power Engineer and Fireman Figures Installed Will Operate on Code 70, 83, and 100 rail Recommended Minimum Radius: 18 inches Accurate Prototypical Sounds for the UP CSA-2 Challenger   Broadway Limited Imports is proud to introduce Paragon4: The new benchmark for premium HO sound-equipped locomotives. SurroundTraxx is a major breakthrough in sound systems for model trains! For the first time, a sound system has been designed with multiple trains in mind. SurroundTraxx gives you the realism of high-fidelity sound moving with the train as it travels about the layout, without installing speakers onboard the engine. SurroundTraxx works with a multiplicity of audio speakers that are strategically placed in hidden locations around the layout. Using the latest digital signal processing (DSP) technology and advanced block detection techniques, SurroundTraxx faithfully reproduces the sounds made by each train on the layout and directs the sound to the speaker closest to the train's location. As a train moves along its route, SurroundTraxx makes continuous adjustments to the sound level of each speaker so that the sound appears to follow the train around the layout. SurroundTraxx does not simply switch the sound from speaker to speaker. It uses an intelligent cross-fade algorithm that factors in train speed, direction, and distance between speakers. The sound makes a smooth transition as your train travels from one sound zone to the next without abrupt pops or thumps. DCC surround-sound system for your layout Suitable for all scales -- N through G! Sounds interact and “move” with your trains; no onboard speakers necessary Use with any 8-ohm speaker (or subwoofer for lower frequencies) Six sound channels support six different “sound zones” on your layout Simultaneous sound operations for up to six trains to be dispatched at once Memory storage for up to 99 locomotive profiles An extensive sound library to closely match all popular steam and diesel prototypes Ambient effects such as echo and reverb Download the data sheet (PDF) SurroundTraxx stores a roster of locomotive sound settings in a database called the Roundhouse. This is an extensive library that you can set up and adjust to match your model's prototype or to sound like your favorite horn or whistle, prime mover, or exhaust chuff. Each engine can have a unique sound profile! Once you have entered your locomotive roster into the Roundhouse, you can use the internal “dispatcher,” which allows up to six trains to be in operation at one time. SurroundTraxx can be set up to pick the first six locomotives detected, or you can assign these slots to the locomotives of your choice (perfect to make sure your favorite engine never goes silent!). These locomotive “slots” used by the dispatcher are called Auto Dispatch (AD) slots. After the trains have been dispatched, the block detector will identify the trains' locations, the speed they are traveling, and the point where they will cross into new blocks. SurroundTraxx uses this information to move the appropriate sounds to the corresponding sound channel (six are available) on the SurroundTraxx unit. SurroundTraxx uses an intelligent cross-fade algorithm that factors in train speed, direction, and distance between speakers. This reproduces the sound in such a way that it appears as though it is being emitted directly from the train rather than the speakers on the layout. The multiple trains running on the layout can all be in the same area or spread throughout the layout. SurroundTraxx will still dispatch and reproduce their respective sounds in full audio richness. It truly is a complete layout sound system with multiple trains and operating sessions in mind! Note: If using single-channel mode (default), the sound will feed through all six channels at once and does not follow the train. In order to set up the other modes of operation, you must use Digitrax® transponding block detection on your layout.  Included with SurroundTraxx: SurroundTraxx system 5V power supply Network cable Speaker harness for six sound channel outputs (6' sections of each) Quick Start Guide Owner’s Manual CD Customer registration card Additional items needed for operation: Up to six 8-ohm speakers Optional subwoofer The appropriate DCC mobile decoders equipped with transponding or a TL-1 transponder Digitrax DCC Command Station, cabs and power boosters Additional speaker wire if using a distance greater than 6’ Digitrax BDL-168 (or older BDL-162) Block Detectors Digitrax RX-4s (eight total)

Code 110 wheels are .110" wide and Code 88 are .088" wide. Code 110 wheels are the common (or "Standard") width wheels and Code 88 are what is called "Semi-Scale" and are used when the modeler wants a more prototypical looking wheel width. Actual HO-Scale prototypical wheel width would be around .067" wide and although they will run OK on the average track they will not go through common turnouts and crossings. Code 88 (.088") is just about the minimum width of wheel that will run on most standard or common track if gauged correctly. It really is a matter of appearances because there's very little operational differences between running Code 110 or Code 88 wheels. Code 88 wheels look really good and are most noticeable on open frame cars like hoppers and tank cars. However, they also look great on boxcars, gondolas, and reefers but not quite as noticeable. As mentioned above track code and wheel code have no relationship meaning Code 110 and Code 88 will run on most any code of track. Track code is simply the measured height of the rail, code 100 is .100" tall, code 83 is .083" tall, code 70 is .070" tall, and so on.
