Description
The Kato 176-8965 is an N scale GE ES44AC GEVO (Evolution Series) diesel locomotive painted and decorated for Union Pacific #5395 in the modern Armour Yellow with gray scheme and the patriotic Nose Flag detail. The ES44AC has been in service from coast to coast since 2003, and Kato's model captures it with prototypically accurate details, fine paint, and Kato's renowned smooth, quiet drivetrain. This is the Standard DC version — DCC-ready for an easy decoder swap when you're ready.

Is this DCC equipped?
No, this is the Standard DC version. It is DCC ready — installation requires removing the lighting board and dropping in a compatible decoder (TCS K1D4, Digitrax DN163K1C, or ESU LokSound 5 micro). The factory does not pre-install a decoder.
What's the minimum curve radius?
11 inch minimum. The locomotive does not run reliably on curves tighter than 11" due to its long wheelbase, so plan your layout accordingly.
What does "Nose Flag" mean?
It refers to the small American flag decal applied to the front nose of the locomotive — a patriotic detail Union Pacific has applied to portions of its modern fleet. This 5395 model is delivered with that nose flag detail factory-applied.
Will it work on Code 55 track?
Yes. Wheel profiles are designed for Code 55 and larger rail, so it will operate cleanly on Atlas Code 55, Peco Code 55, Kato UNITRACK Code 80, and similar mainline N track.
