The Siemens ALC-42 “Charger” is Amtrak’s newest long-distance diesel locomotive, introduced to replace the aging GE P42 fleet in general passenger service. The first ALC-42 units entered service in February 2022 on the Empire Builder. Amtrak #304 is decorated in the Phase VI paint scheme of blue, red, white, and silver — a transitional design still seen on Amtrak’s roster as newer schemes are introduced.
