The WalthersMainline EMD SD70M in Union Pacific colors, road number 4188, ready for HO scale mainline duty. Introduced in 1992 and built through 2004, the modified SD70M pairs the SD70 platform with a wide nose and North American Safety Cab. This model is based on the Phase I version.
This is the Standard DC version. It runs straight out of the box on a conventional DC layout, and the 21-pin plug means you can drop in the DCC decoder of your choice whenever you are ready, and the speaker is already installed and wired at the factory for a sound decoder.
Underneath it is the same drive Walthers puts in its Proto locomotives: a 5-pole skew-wound motor, dual brass flywheels, all-wheel drive and pickup, and a die-cast chassis that gives it the weight to pull a real train.

Does this locomotive have sound?
No. This is the Standard DC version. It has a 21-pin DCC plug and a factory-installed speaker, so adding a sound decoder is a plug-in job.
Will it run on my DC layout?
Yes. It runs on a conventional DC power pack straight out of the box.
What is the minimum radius?
18 inches will work, but 22 inches or larger is recommended for reliable running and a better look.
Is it ready to run?
Yes. It comes fully assembled with metal knuckle couplers and metal wheels installed.
Can I add grab irons?
Yes. The shell has molded drill starter points. The SD70-Series Diesel Detail Kit (910-261) is sold separately.
Are other road numbers available?
Yes. See More in This Series above for the rest of this run. They are a one-time run in limited quantity.
