The EMD F3 is a 1,500 horsepower diesel locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1945 and 1949. The F3 was the third model in EMD's successful F-unit series of cab unit diesels, and it was the second most produced of the series behind the F7. The F3's were widely used in both freight and passenger service, and in total, EMD built more than 1,100 A-units and almost 700 B-units. In this production, we are modeling A and B-units from nine railroads with prototypically accurate road numbers and paint schemes. We are offering A-B sets with Powered A-units (w/ Paragon4 Sound) and unpowered B-units, and also separate single A and B-units with our full Paragon4 DC/DCC/Sound system. Broadway Limited Imports Broadway Limited 7237 | UP Big Boy #4014, Promontory Excursion, Glossy Finish, Challenger Excursion Tender, Paragon4 Sound/DC/DCC, Smoke | N Scale
Often called the largest steam loco ever made, and certainly a contender for the Worlds Most Famous Locomotive, the Big Boy was forged under some of the most strenuous demands ever placed on a locomotive. The UP Railroad needed a locomotive that could be used to pull a 3,600-ton train over Sherman Hill and the 1.14% grade from Ogden to Wasatch, Utah without the need for helpers. When the design specifications were complete, it was decided on the use of a simple articulated, high speed, 132 ft. long locomotive sporting sixteen 68 diameter drive wheels. What they created was the longest and among the heaviest, most powerful steam locomotive legends in the world. And had not the worker at ALCO chalked Big Boy on the side of the smoke box of one of the 4-8-8-4s under construction, a name that immediately caught on, it is rumored that the name of the type would have been Wasatch, for the mountains they were built to conquer. Quote from Worlds Greatest Steam Locomotives by Eugene L. Huddleston: There were 25 locomotives fabricated in two different groups. Class 1 were locomotives #4000-4019 and Class 2 was numbered 4020-4024. The first Big Boy #4000 was delivered to Omaha, NE on September 5, 1941. The Union Pacific Railroad's commitment to the Big Boy required them to replace the lighter rail and straighten out many miles of track for clearance as well as to resize elements of their service areas (such as turntable lengths, etc.) for the entire line these locos would run on. The Big Boys demonstrated fantastic strength and speed as they faced these challenges throughout their storied careers. With the total mileage on the Big Boy fleet being approximately 1,000,000 miles for each locomotive, one must say that they earned their reputation. Several examples remain in museums around the country but silently they sit as a visual echo to the thunder that once made them revered throughout the landscape that the Big Boys dominated. In our first production of this model in N scale, BLI is modeling the Union Pacific Big Boy with these notable features: Accurately modeled front end with appropriate aftercooler system for each class Accurately modeled 25-C-100 and 25-C-400 tender, appropriate for each class Accurately modeled oil tender for #4014 which operates in excursion service today Two models painted in attractive two-tone gray paint schemes that the Big Boys never received in real life Industry-leading Model Features: Paragon4 Sound & Control System featuring ROLLING THUNDER Integral Dual-Mode Decoder with Back EMF for Superb Slow Speed Operation in DC and DCC Precision Drive Mechanism Engineered for Heavy Towing and Smooth Slow Speed Operation Operating Smoke Unit with On/Off Switch Six Drivers and All Tender Wheels Pick-up Electricity from Track Die Cast Locomotive Body with Die Cast Chassis for Heavier Weight and Maximum Tractive Effort Rubber Tires on Two Drivers for Additional Tractive Effort Premium Caliber Painting Prototypically Accurate Paint Schemes and Road Numbers Many Separately Applied Details such as Handrails, Grab Irons, Piping, Tender Ladders, Whistle, and Bell Prototypical Headlight and Rear Light Operation Separately Controllable Cab Light and Lighted Numberboards Prototypically Accurate Sounds for the Union Pacific Big Boy Operating Microtrains-compatible Couplers Will Operate on Code 55, Code 70, and Code 80 Rail Minimum Operating Radius: 9.75 inches Broadway Limited Imports is proud to introduce Paragon4: The new benchmark for premium HO sound-equipped locomotives. Kadee Kadee 501 | Arch Bar Trucks with 33" Ribbed Back Wheels - Metal Fully Sprung | HO Scale
#501 Arch Bar Trucks with 33" Ribbed Back Wheels - HO ScaleMetal Fully Sprung Equalized Trucks Mounts with a #2 or 2-56 screw.Mounting Screws not Included. The Arch Bar Truck is typical of these trucks from around the turn of the century. Despite the age of these trucks, they saw more than seventy years of service in some applications. The arch bar was allowed in interchange service until about 1941. On railroads that were not common carriers such as logging or other industrial lines, this restriction of the trucks did not apply since the trucks did not operate on rails other than the owner's. The Northern Pacific, for example, used truss rod frame maintenance of way cars fitted with arch bar trucks well into the early 1970's. Many logging railroads also used them at least until then. HO-Scale Metal Fully Sprung Trucks Features: Code 110 (.110) #523 33" Ribbed Back Wheels Accurate Markings Incredible Detail True to Prototype Non-Magnetic Metal Wheels Highly Flexible Sprung Trucks Metal Sideframes & Fully Sprung Bolster Smooth tracking Free Rolling Contoured Insulated Plastic Axles RP-25 Free Rolling Wheels #637 HO Scale Truck Springs Patent number 5,768,999 Package Includes: (2) Each #501 Arch Bar Trucks (assembled) The term Code 110 and Code 88 relates to the width of the wheels and has no relationship to track code. Code 110 wheels are .110" wide and Code 88 are .088" wide. Code 110 wheels are the common (or "Standard") width wheels and Code 88 are what is called "Semi-Scale" and are used when the modeler wants a more prototypical looking wheel width. Actual HO-Scale prototypical wheel width would be around .067" wide and although they will run OK on the average track they will not go through common turnouts and crossings. Code 88 (.088") is just about the minimum width of wheel that will run on most standard or common track if gauged correctly. It really is a matter of appearances because there's very little operational differences between running Code 110 or Code 88 wheels. Code 88 wheels look really good and are most noticeable on open frame cars like hoppers and tank cars. However, they also look great on boxcars, gondolas, and reefers but not quite as noticeable. As mentioned above track code and wheel code have no relationship meaning Code 110 and Code 88 will run on most any code of track. Track code is simply the measured height of the rail, code 100 is .100" tall, code 83 is .083" tall, code 70 is .070" tall, and so on.

Broadway Limited Imports Broadway Limited 6960 | Northern Pacific A-3 4-8-4, #2661, Pre-1947, Black Boiler, Paragon4 Sound/DC/DCC, Smoke | HO Scale
By the 1920s the Northern Pacific Railroad needed bigger passenger locomotives. With the help of the American Locomotive Company's design engineers, NP designed a new locomotive with a massive firebox that had a 115 square foot grate area supported by a four wheel trailing truck. It was the first locomotive with a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. ALCO delivered the first of 12 of these new locomotives in December of 1926, with the balance arriving early in 1927. Designated Class A, and assigned road numbers 2600 through 2611, they had 73" drivers, 28 x 30" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 210 psi, a tractive effort of 57,500 lbs and weighed 426,000 pounds. Later, the boiler pressure was raised to 240 psi which increased the tractive effort to 65,700 pounds. These were the first of this new wheel arrangement and thus were to be the namesake, with the name Northern Pacific selected which was very quickly shortened to just Northern. Ten Class A-2s (road numbers 2650 through 2659) came from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1934. These heavy Northerns had 77" drivers, 28 x 31" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 260 psi, a tractive effort of 69,800 lbs and a weight of 489,400 pounds. In 1938, The Northern Pacific took delivery of eight Class A-3s (road numbers 2660 through 2667), and at the sample time three more were delivered to the SP&S. The specifications for these locomotives were identical to the Class A-2 except that each weighed 2,400 pounds more. The SP&S locomotives were designated Class E-1. They were mostly identical to the Northern Pacific A-3's, except all three were oil burners. The eight Class A-4s (road numbers 2670 through 2677) were delivered by Baldwin in 1941, and had the same basic specifications as the A-3s, but were different in appearance, with 14 wheel centipede tenders and vestibule cabs, and they were 1000 pounds heavier. The last of the 4-8-4s purchased by the NP were the Class A-5s, which were built by Baldwin in 1943. This group of 10 (road numbers 2680 through 2689) were built to the same specifications as the Class A-4s, but turned out to be 16,200 lbs heavier. They were among the heaviest of all the Northern type locomotives ever built, at 508,500 pounds only the Santa Fe Class 2900s weighed more. There are no surviving Northern Pacific Northerns.
