The C44-9W used a new HiAd, bolster less low-weight truck that was designed for better grip on the rails no matter the weather. A split cooling system lowered engine temperatures and fuel consumption as well, granting these locomotives a longer operation life and lower overhead costs. The GP40 was considered the top of EMD’S four-axle line when first introduced in the late 1960s. It visually differed from earlier GP models, featuring three radiator fans on its long hood, but was otherwise similar in style to the GP38, which entered production around the same time. The locomotive was popular for its ease of maintenance and standardized features and remained in production until succeeded by the GP40-2 in the early 1970s. Today, many remain in service hauling local freights and performing yard duties. Constructed between 1965 and 1971, the four-axle GP40 was one of the earliest EMD locomotives from the Second Generation era, and remarkably, it continues to be found in operation today. Built to replace the previously offered GP35 series, the GP40 was designed with versatility in mind, being equally efficient at yard work, industrial operations, and light road duties. A staggering 1,221 units were produced for railroads across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, using mostly standardized components (for ease of maintenance) unless directed otherwise by the purchaser.  Our model is available in numerous roadnames with protypical decoration.
